Springfield, Chelmsford.

Our client asked us to create a modern, clean and functional garden to highlight a new summer house and shed.

To soften the garden, we created a curved patio, which was laid with a silver-grey slate. Slate has a subtle colour palette, ranging from blue and grey to muted reds and lavender, which can add real interest to a garden. To finish the paving, we gave it a hard-wearing granite edging, giving the garden a contemporary feel.

We added a pathway from the patio to the shed and the summerhouse. This means that even during the winter, both buildings can be easily accessed without walking on the grass.

New turf was laid to replace the old lawn. And to bring all the aspects of the garden together, we replaced the old garden fence with panels matching the colour of the summer house.

For this build we used: Marshalls Casarta silver-grey Slate, sawn granite edging, and the summer house and shed were from Poulton Portables.

Mildmay Road, Chelmsford.

Our client wanted to have a patio at the front of the house which was in keeping with the Victorian feel of the property. They also wanted a step up to the front door and railings to match the other properties on the street.

We suggested using reclaimed bricks for the steps and front wall to make sure they matched the soft-red bricks of the house. We also used a lime mortar which would have been used on the original house.

For the patio, we laid carbon black limestone slabs and created a small area which could be used for future planting.

To finish the space, we replaced the existing railings with black wrought iron railings which better suit the Victorian property.

For this build we used: Black limestone slabs, reclaimed soft red bricks, sourced to match the property and custom-made wrought iron railings supplied by AM PM Fabrications.

  • Front Patio

Roman Road, Ingatestone – Garden.

This garden had already been designed by a member of the client’s family, but they wanted us to create the garden following their specifications.

We gave them advice on the best way to build the walls and how to seal the water features.

They had a small river as a water feature so we built a recess to go around it. The water was pumped into a basin and using a sump pump — often used to get rid of flooding in basements — the water was pumped back underground to start again.

At the bottom of the garden, we laid sandstone slabs, while the patio and steps leading up to it the house were porcelain.

The lawn was laid with artificial grass and the pathways surrounding it were gravel. We put down a gravel stabilisation mat first to reduce the weed growth and keep the gravel on the pathways.

For this build we used: Porcelain tiles for the main patio, Kandla Grey Sandstone, gravel with stabilisation mats, 40mm Artificial Lawn and Block walls which were rendered and painted white.

Chelmsford – Driveway.

The client wanted us to remove the existing tarmac driveway, which was damaged and broken, and replace it with new block paving.

They had found that the old driveway suffered from waterlogging, so to correct this, we suggested that a soakaway be installed. A soakaway varies in size depending on the amount of water we calculate it to take. The Soakaway is a simple way of dispersing surface and stormwater in situations where connection to the SW system is impractical or unwarranted. The basic principle is that of a ‘reverse well’ i.e. a ‘hole-in-the-gound’ that loses water rather than collecting water.

We laid the soakaway under the turf next to the driveway, this was then finished with topsoil and turf to hide the soakaway. The turf will grow without any sign of the soakaway being there.

We suggested using a red block paving stone for the driveway with a border of charcoal. The herringbone layout of the blocks is a good option for driveways because it stops blocks moving out of position when cars break or turn.

For this build we used: Red Lakeland block paver with charcoal edging and soakaway system.

Services Included

  • Soakaway
  • New turf

Norsey View Drive, Billericay – Driveway & Garden.

Our client had a growing family which meant additional cars being parked on the drive. They wanted to keep the existing raised beds and trees but have a bigger area for parking and an in-out driveway to make access easier.

They also wanted a revamped back garden, with a bigger area for socialising.

We suggested a grey block-paved driveway, with a new wall to create the in-out option they wanted. To break up the large driveway we added a semi-circle bed at the front, edged with a charcoal stone border. This edging was also added to the existing raised beds and trees.

In the back garden, we laid a large patio across the width of the house, using Argent paving stones. These are a granite blend and have a subtle sparkle to them, which creates a great contemporary finish.

For this build we used: Marshalls Argent paving for the garden and grey block paving with charcoal edging for the driveway.

Barnet – Corona Road, Basildon.

Our client wanted a back garden and driveway that was safe, non-slip, easy to maintain and all on one level.

We created a rounded patio laid with Rippon Buff Sandstone slabs and edged with Sandstone bricks.

We removed the original stone pathway, widened it and re-laid it with gravel. To make the garden as accessible as possible, we used gravel stabilisation sheets. These are laid underneath the gravel and make it easier to walk on, with less gravel being moved from the pathway to the lawn and flowerbeds.

At the front of the house, we laid wood-effect stones for a pathway from the driveway. Using stone instead of wood means less maintenance as the stone will be long-lasting.

Finally, we repaired the lawn so everything looked as good as new.

For this build, we used: gravel stabilisation sheets, 20mm Cotswold gravel and sandstone slabs and bricks.

Services Included

  • 2 x Gravel Pathway’s
  • Patio

Barnet – Sensory Garden.

We were asked to create a sensory garden for a care home in Hertfordshire. Working with Hollmark, their specialist garden designers, we took the care home users special requirements into consideration with the build.

We looked at ways to maximise wheelchair access and reduce trip hazards in the garden, creating a safe and sensory experience for residents.

Brick planters were used to create a long-lasting feature for the garden. The planters also meant that flowers were more accessible as they weren’t all at ground level.

To make sure the garden could be used in all weathers, we laid a resin pathway which is less slippery when wet. The resin also limits the number of weeds, making sure the garden is easy to maintain. Then, to highlight the edge of the path, we introduced a stone edging to add a contrasting texture.

For the build we used: Marshalls argent bricks for the planters, @bradstoneuk slabs with weatherpoint 365 and Autumn gold resin for the pathway.
